최태원 SK그룹 회장이 인공지능(AI) 메모리 수요 확대에 대응해 SK하이닉스의 웨이퍼 생산능력을 향후 5년 안에 두 배로 늘리겠다고 밝혔다. AI 데이터센터와 AI PC 확산으로 메모리 수요가 장기화할 수 있다는 판단 아래 SK하이닉스가 웨이퍼 기준 생산능력 확충을 중장기 과제로 제시한 것이다.

"메모리 병목현상 2030년까지…AI PC도 기회"
2일(현지시간) 최 회장은 대만 타이베이에서 열린 '컴퓨텍스 2026' SK하이닉스 부스 투어 이후 기자들과 만나 "향후 5년 내에 전체 생산능력을 두 배로 늘릴 것"이라고 말했다. 생산능력 확대가 D램과 낸드, HBM 등 특정 제품에 국한되는지를 묻는 질문에는 "제가 말하는 생산능력은 웨이퍼를 의미한다"며 "웨이퍼 생산능력을 두 배로 늘릴 것"이라고 설명했다.

웨이퍼는 반도체 칩을 만드는 원판이다. 웨이퍼 생산능력을 늘린다는 것은 특정 제품의 단기 증산이 아니라 메모리 반도체를 만들 수 있는 전체 제조 기반을 확대한다는 뜻이다. SK하이닉스가 HBM 시장에서 주도권을 이어가려면 첨단 제품 개발뿐 아니라 고객사의 장기 수요에 맞춰 실제 공급 가능한 물량을 확보해야 한다. 최 회장의 발언은 AI 메모리 경쟁이 기술력과 함께 중장기 생산능력 확보 경쟁으로 옮겨가고 있음을 보여준다.
